"In this movie one of the things that I had trouble with at the very beginning was the idea that Mal is kind of a Western fellow and River’s living in kind of a Noir. And how do I reconcile those? Y’know? I spoke to my professor, Jean Basinger [?], about it and she said ‘Well, first of all, go to the Noir Westerns, you know - The Pursuit, The Furies, Johnny Guitar. There’s a lot of movies that combine both genres and you shouldn’t forget that.’ And the woman who was left behind because a hero was too out of touch with his feelings - well, of course that belongs in both genres. So the idea of an Inara postcard and Inara being out of his life now does work perfectly and it kind of helps connect those two genres. Obviously neither of those genres is a sci-fi action movie, but um … that’s sort of the whole point."

Joss Whedon, in the Serenity DVD commentary.

Even though Serenity wasn’t a complete success and even though it wasn’t able to recapture the magic that Firefly had … I love Joss Whedon for putting this kind of thoughtful quality into every one of his projects.  That’s why, even though I didn’t love it, I hope Dollhouse gets a second season.
